Monitoring the Future is an ongoing study of behaviors, attitudes and values of American secondary school students and young adults. The studies are conducted at the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center. Here is the 2011 national study on drug use among adolescents.
The Campaign for Youth Justice
The Campaign for Youth Justice is a member organization of the National Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Coalition dedicated to ending the practice of trying, sentencing, and incarcerating youth under 18 in the adult criminal justice system. The Campaign works in partnership with state-based campaigns in a number of states and serves as a clearinghouse of information on youth prosecuted as adults.
Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth
The Campaign advocates for alternatives to life in prison without parole sentences to juveniles. It supports careful reviews of offenders to determine whether they have demonstrated they are capable of making responsible decisions and do not pose a threat to society.
Center for Juvenile Justice Reform, Georgetown University
The Center is designed to support leaders in the juvenile justice and related systems of care. It seeks to support work being done across the country in juvenile justice reform by providing a multi-systems perspective and resources in support of this work.
Coalition for Juvenile Justice
The Coalition works to prevent children and youth from becoming involved in the courts and to uphold the highest standards of care for youth entering the juvenile justice system. The Coalition is made up of individuals, practitioners, advocates, and youth who voluntarily serve at the state and national level.
Michigan Council on Crime & Delinquency
The Council is dedicated to improving the effectiveness of policies and systems aimed at the prevention and reduction of crime and delinquency. The Council is a private nonprofit corporation that advocates for sound public policy impacting individuals and families involved in the adult and juvenile justice systems. It strives to shape public policy through data-driven advocacy that informs the public and educates service providers, policymakers, and justice officials.
Models for Change, Systems Reform in Juvenile Justice
Models for Change is a national initiative funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to accelerate reform of juvenile justice systems across the country. Focused on select states, it aims to create replicable models for reform that hold young people accountable for their actions, support their rehabilitation, protect them from harm, improve their life chances, and manage the risk they pose to themselves and to public safety.
National Center for Juvenile Justice
The National Center for Juvenile Justice is the research division of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. It conducts independent research on topics related directly and indirectly to juvenile justice.
National Juvenile Justice Network
The National Juvenile Justice Network works to enhance the ability of statewide juvenile justice networks to advocate for fair, equitable, and developmentally appropriate adjudication and treatment for all youth and families in the juvenile justice system. It is a membership organization of state-based advocacy groups that came together to improve each state’s capacity.
Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention is an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice. It sponsors research, program and training initiatives, establishes priorities and policies on federal juvenile justice issues, disseminates information, and awards funding to states to support local programming. The Office supports states and communities in developing effective and coordinated prevention and intervention programs and improving the juvenile justice system so that it protects public safety, holds offenders accountable, and provides treatment and rehabilitative services to juveniles and their families.
Project to End Juvenile Life Without Parole
The Project is an initiative by the University of San Francisco School of Law to assist juvenile defenders and advocates in challenging life without parole sentences. The project has produced a web-based guide to help lawyers challenge juvenile life without parole sentences. It provides access to international legal materials, state laws, and appellate briefs, as well as information on legal experts and links to relevant news.
Texas Public Policy Foundation Center for Effective Justice
The Center for Effective Justice is part of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, which promotes individual responsibility, free enterprise, limited government, and private property rights. The Center seeks to apply those principles to criminal justice, bringing together stakeholders across the political spectrum.
The Vera Institute of Justice is a nonpartisan nonprofit center for justice policy and practice. Its research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance help leaders improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera’s projects and reform initiatives are typically conducted in partnership with local, state, or national officials throughout the United States and around the world.
