Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the initial appointments to the restructured Michigan Committee on Juvenile Justice.

Created by Executive Order 2012-1, the committee advises the governor on juvenile justice issues and guides effective implementation of juvenile justice policies and programs. The recent signing of Executive Order 2017-12 restructured the committee to be composed of between 15 and 33 members to comply with the federal Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Act.

“With the diverse experiences among these individuals, I am confident they will serve the committee and the state well,” Snyder said.

Terms Expiring Dec. 31, 2018:

Nancy Becker Bennett of Okemos is the division director for grants and community services for the Michigan State Police. She also served as manager of the law enforcement section of the Office of Drug Control Policy. Bennett holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in justice and law enforcement from American University. She will represent law enforcement and juvenile justice agencies.

Cameron Clark of Beulah is the director of youth services for the 19th Circuit Court in Manistee. He previously served as an independent K-12 educational consultant, and as a quality schools facilitator for the Michigan Association of Public School Academies. Clark holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan. He will represent law enforcement and juvenile justice agencies.

Terms Expiring Dec. 31, 2019:

Jessica Black of Mount Pleasant is an intern the for the Isabella County Restoration House (ICRH), a homeless shelter where she previously served two years as an intake volunteer. She is the treasurer and past president of the Student Social Work Association at Central Michigan University, and is the ICRH representative on the Isabella County Substance Abuse Coalition. Black is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work at Central Michigan University. She will represent persons under the age of 24.

Terms Expiring Dec. 31, 2020:

Terri Gilbert of Ann Arbor is the director of operations at the child and adolescent data lab in Ann Arbor. She previously served as the executive director of the Oakland County Bar Association and as bureau director of child welfare funding and juvenile programs. Gilbert holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Oakland University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan. She will represent public agencies concerned with delinquency prevention or treatment.

Sara McCauley of Traverse City is the founder and principal of Strategic Policy Consultants, supporting clients in Michigan and Washington D.C. on issues including juvenile justice, family economic security, education, and workforce. McCauley holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Albion College and a master’s degree from the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. She will represent public agencies concerned with delinquency prevention or treatment.

After initial appointments, members will serve three-year terms.
